Thanksgiving 2013

It feels like the longest short week ever. So much to do and so little time. I ran around town last weekend with my list of things to buy before the big cooking day tomorrow, Thursday. People who don't know or live in the US... Thanksgiving is a feast, a meal to share with family and friends of supposedly traditional foodstuffs the Pilgrims consumed in celebration of life in the new world after their 1st year.

This Year's Menu:

Roasted turkey breast (because it's not worth getting a skinny bird. There's hardly any meat on them!)
stuffing ( go go Mrs. Cubbinson's traditional variety. I make it with extra poultry seasoning. Yum.)
cranberry sauce (sometimes sauce, sometimes gel. I like mine with bits of tangerine in it. It's a sweet/sour juxtaposition my taste buds go nuts over against the stuffing's savory contrast.)
turkey gravy (Cambell's makes it with no dairy, thank you)
yams (I usually omit yams, but this year I felt like having them. I'll serve them with brown sugar, cinnamon and margarine.)
roasted carrots (in olive oil with rosemary. I already bought a rosemary plant and killed it. So sad.)
scalloped potatoes (specifically for Stephen because I don't consume dairy)
Brown Irish Soda Bread (making this recipe for the first time this year instead of going the easy route buying brown and serve pull-a-part rolls)
spiced pumpkin & carrot cake (because it's a must to have pumpkin flavored something at Thanksgiving.)

Recipes for the Brown Irish Soda Bread and Spiced Pumpkin and Carrot Cake can be found on my recipe website My Red Recipe Book .

My Superbowl Weekend

Friday night and feeling like a looser in love because even though one guy in Torrance wants to talk, a gut feeling tells me he's not the one, only a crush, an Aryan fascination of mine for blonde haired blue eyed men, I stay late at work to see if I can finish my P&P, which was requested of me a month ago but couldn't, so a little before 7PM, I bail and head for home. I'm thinking Friday night - movie night so I stopped by Best Buy on the way. I was looking for two movies specifically - Seven Psychopaths and Looper. Best Buy had a deal to where if you let the cell phone guys check to see if yours is upgradable, then they will give you a $5 coupon for a dvd purchase. I'm game. I had to wait around for a rep because the one other guy was helping someone else and the transaction was taking fucking 4ever. I could only find Looper, so I got that and headed to the checkout where I encountered another line and my this time it's 8:45? They close at 9PM on Friday and I was just about to throw down my dvd to the floor and walk out when another checkout lane opened and I was up next. One out of two dvd's acquired and I headed for home.

So Saturday rolls around and, hey it's Groundhog Day and with the freaky hot and icy cold winter we had, I'm am done with it. Thank goodness that damn rodent in PA did not see his shadow. And then there was a news that another earthquake hit Japan this morning. You know what I think? I think as long as Japan keeps having earthquakes, it lessens the chance for California to have a big one. And I say this on 02/02 when it was a seventy-some odd degree days today so no need for long sleeves or a jacket. Now this is my kind of Winter weather...

After sleeping most of the morning away because sometimes, I've just gotta sleep in, I decide I'm hungry and head for the kitchen. And I notice my son has left dirty dishes in the left sink and standing water in the right one where the garbage disposal is. So I must go out and get at least some Drain-o this weekend. I still want that other dvd... what to so, what to do... I know. I'll go to the new Walmart in Irvine. And so I did. And I got the dvd and saw that Looper was a lower price there than at Best Buy so I think they just lost my business for new releases. And I also pick up some chips, salsa and ginger ale for the game tomorrow and they also has loose Italian sausage and the package's serving suggestion was pizza - I can make that. Another great choice for game food. And so I don't have to leave the house again to shop, I got my cats provisions, too. The food, the litter, a new laser pointer. OMG, AC wore herself out chasing the damn thing.

I watched the superbowl munching on the sausage and peppers pizza I made from scratch - take that! Woo! And yes, I was appalled that the lights went out in the superdome...And then the Ravens won. And again, appalled.

What I did on my summer vacation

Actually, I was thinking about my pending trip to NY and trolling through graveyards for ancestors right before I woke up from sleeping on the couch and realized I was hungry. It was Friday night and well past when I normally eat dinner. I thought making up a dish of yaki soba with some vegetables was a good idea. And it was until I decided to use the nifty mandolin slicer for a carrot and my right thumb got in the way. I lopped off about 1/3rd of the tip right next to the nail. It didn't bleed much at first since I was applying direct pressure immediately after it happened, but then when I went to the bathroom to find a bandage, I decided to run some cold water over it which stopped any clotting that previously occurred and the sight of my dark red blood dripping into the white porcelain bathroom sink was enough to make me realize this was kind of serious so I better pay attention to what I was doing. I grabbed some toilet tissue and again began applying direct pressure to the wound and the bleeding stopped. I placed a bandage over the cut.

I had to change the bandage a few times throughout the weekend. I kept hitting it wanting to use it, but I couldn't. You never know how much you use your thumbs until you can't. Buttoning my Levi's, my wool coat, using the fob for my car alarm, the remote for the tv... these were the most annoying tasks to perform without the full use my thumb. Ouch!

After babying it over the weekend, I'm using it a bit more, but it still smarts. The wound doesn't look that bad.

Basic

I think if I had to live in a world where there there were no pot roast nor roasted chicken to eat, I would not want to live in that world.

I made pot roast for dinner. I started with a clod of frozen beef shoulder. Add 4 beef bullion cubes, chopped potatoes, carrots, onions, celery, steak seasoning and a cup of water in a roasting bag and at 300 degrees and three hours later, bingo - dinner.

Thirty minutes into dinner, with me and my son consuming the meal, it's half gone. Yum.

Cooking again

I cooked a classic dish called "Chicken with 40 cloves of garlic" today. I edited the recipe to allow me to make it in a crock pot with boneless skinless chicken breasts. It was quite basic and very good. The prepared garlic I picked up at my local Korean grocery store. The rest, I already had on hand. And I made some steamed new potatoes for the starch.

In Deep.

Jesus, after today's cooking adventure, you'd think some lucky man would marry me.

I bought my first deep fryer today.

I can fucking make restaurant quality egg rolls and fried wonton noodles now.

A Memorial Weekend

It's 6-something in the morning on Sunday and I was up before the dawn watering my tomato plant which looks successful up to this point, checking the cat water and food and brushing my teeth. I am sick of my clutter which I am coming to find out is so much less than what it could be compared to what other people's ideas of what clutter is but yet unacceptable to me because it's an in-my-face example of disorganization and I don't consider myself to be a disorganized person. I usually have things put in their special place so I can find them again and my clutter breaks that trend and creates a certain amount of havoc and frustration in my life. Once, I was trying to cope with my clutter by saying I was out growing my condo since I have lived here for ten years as of March. Once even, I tried to justify that I was just too tired to deal with it due to me dealing with a cronic disease let alone my daily grid. But after watching an episode of Clean House from St. Louis, I felt like, yeah, I could kind of relate as well as agree to the fact that I'll do things to make myself feel good and not necessarily the things that need to be done because they are not fun and considered chores. And so my slightly cluttered ways continue to a degree.

I'd decided that I need to locate my paperwork from the last time I put together a loan submission package while applying for a refi and I need to locate my notary certificate. I think these documents are located within two plastic gray trays of assorted clutter that at one time landed on my desk, but now that the desk has been changed and organized, have been relocated into my gray trays. These gray trays were once considered under the bed storage when I first moved into my condo. They are actually trays from Smart and Final like the ones bus boys use to clear your table after having eaten in a restaurant. They were cheaper than plastic bins specially made to be under the bed storage and I'll go cheap if it's functional so that's why I bought them. I think there are 6-8 floating around in various areas of my condo, but for the most part I believe they have been retired to the right corner stacked up in the bottom of my closet waiting to be utilised again.

I am determined to create a save or throw pile comprised of the things in my two clutter bins before I go and read the newspaper this morning. I don't actually read the entire paper. I don't think anyone does these days. I rather skim for what I find as interesting and then read that article and then continue skimming again to the next subject that sparks my mind. I love to go through the ads. I think it's for the color but moreover to find a bargain. I love the Target ads, even though we know that Walmart has better prices and for this reason, rarely produces a paper ad.

I'm procrastinating now about going through the rest of the bins since I have found my loan submission package and have calculated my interest rate change. I'm looking forward to the rate drop as I have a hybrid note that I don't even think they offer anymore and will adjust to be lower than my start rate, or so I hope. Now on to locate that certificate.

I barbecued hamburgers yesterday which came out excellent. I also made homemade salsa as well. Yum. Even though I went to Sprouts and Ralph's and spent $95, I need to go to the grocery store again because my pantry has been depleted and I need cereal and milk.

My neighbors are entirely too noisy for this time of day.

130 Days

This is the letter I wrote in response to being dumped on voicemail after the holidays. The lesson I learned dating this guy is listen to your gut feeling and don't let things drag on longer than they need to. There are bigger, better and more fish in the sea.

**********************************************************************************

I don’t imagine you will read this email at all. You’ll probably delete it to spare your feelings and diminish mine because that’s just the way you are with your ego. But if you do find the courage to read this, I have to tell you I’m sorry for getting so involved so fast if at all. Having a relationship with you seemed promising, but it just was not in the cards. Your life simply has very little room in it for me and I allowed my involvement to go on far too long.

My roughly 130 day relationship with you was punctuated in the beginning with the death of your neighbor and you calling me about every ten minutes while I was dealing with a business client and then the death of your guinea pig. I watched you coil into a fetal position and cry “your mom and everyone only wants you for your how much money you can make for them”, after the animal died which was clearly not the case with me because I could care less how well-off you think you are. I’ve dated men richer than you and I’ve dated men poorer than me and as long as they can pay their bills and I’m not paying for them all the time, I really don’t care what you make. And in the end with the announcement of your father’s heart attack, probably awaking the feelings of your own mortality more than ever because you talked about giving my son your personal property?, as well as the death of your cousin, which you didn’t even bother to tell me about until you were almost on your way home but conveniently got stuck in Seattle over New Years Eve and then we had that mishap with the airport. I mean, I called you and even texted you, too, for three hours while I waited for you to land, but you ignored me and never replied. You said you’d call when you got to the airport and you never did.

In between was approximately 12 days of you and me in bed and/or on dinner dates, one dedication ceremony for work and a few times at the lake. All the rest of the time, you seemed to be busy and working, exhausted, sick and even in the hospital and if you had the time, you weren’t interested in what I wanted to do. For instance, when I told you I thought It would be cool for us to go and kayak on the Newport Back Bay after watching a show on PBS, you thought it would be funny to run the jet ski through it and my idea was never brought up again. When you put parameters around me talking to you on the phone (remember when you said, “I talk all day on the phone at work so I don’t want to spend a lot of time talking to you on the phone, I rather talk to you in person”), to use a baseball analogy… was strike one. In person, exhausted from your long work day you wanted to eat then frequently fell asleep on the couch or in the club chair. Keeping the schedule that you do, whatever it is you make up for yourself, must be maintained for the benefit of the project and I understand that. With it out of control, it also wears on your health and runs you into the ground so much so you have no time or energy for me. Although there were other glaring instances I could mention, strike two was the three times I invited you to dinner either out or at my house thinking that you not having to cooking would be less of a strain on you but you didn’t even acknowledge that. I guess my choices are not good enough for you, so they were dismissed. No one had ever died from my cooking and my friends seem to like the places I eat out at, so maybe that was just your own personal hang-up.

The third strike was the level of communication you had with me versus your construction friends. It was clearly different… like when you slipped and said you told one of then that ‘she likes to fuck, she’d never say no to that’ or how you said that you couldn’t wait to tell them and so they would laugh their head off about me yelling ‘no’ a million times on the back of the jet ski, something I had never did before in my life and was absolutely terrified about because I’m not a fan of deep water. It wasn’t funny, it was cruel. Or the email you sent bout how stockbrokers should jump out of the windows of the NYSE because the market got so bad due to the housing crisis. You knew I worked in the financial field for years and I felt that was totally insensitive of you. I can only imagine what else you told them about making me out to be the butt of your jokes.

I’m not going to even get into your random acts of drunkenness, public or otherwise. You know what those were because even you said you drink too much and it’s because of the stress level you deal with at work. That moment of personal clarity and your ability to self-correct on that one element gave me a glimmer of hope things might get better about the other aspects of your life, too, but I guess that was too much to wish for. Oh yeah, you’re scratchy eyes were caused by you drinking too much wine all the time – nothing more and nothing less. Your eyes need to be hydrated with something other than wine, so on a wine drinking binge when your liver and kidneys get overloaded with it, that’s what happens – that sand in your eyes feeling. That and the onset of adult acne. Now I understand part of the reason what the witch hazel was used for.

But to top it off, the holiday season, November and December, was the worst and it was the most lonely and depressing time for me ever. On Thanksgiving, you were sick yet again and so into your own incapacity, you never picked up the phone when I called and then failed to call me and let me know you having my son and I over for Thanksgiving dinner was cancelled. When I showed up on your doorstep, I’m sorry I even gave my son the opportunity to shake your hand because up until that point he thought you were just a figment of my imagination when I talked about you. I ended up salvaging the meal and we had turkey after all that weekend, but you never bothered to ask what I did or to reschedule. After that, we never seemed to get back on track. I put together a gift basket for you for Christmas of Asian food from your favorite store and two different cook books with the thought that you enjoy cooking so much, told you I wanted to deliver it, but you never found the time to accept it in person. I just left it on your doorstep and you didn’t even bother to say ‘thank you’ later.

The last time I talked to you on the phone, and I had not seen you in 5 weeks by then, you informed me that it was my job to interrogate you so that I could learn the details of what is going on in your life. I stood there dumbfounded because, hey, isn’t sharing your feelings and the details of your life however mundane they may be just simple human communication?

You have been through some of the most stressful times in your life since we met in August and it took its toll on whatever relationship was eked out in between. Thanks for leaving me a message on voicemail that you are not going to be calling me anymore.

Appliance Reliance

I think my Maytag refrigerator is less than two years old and just this month, I had to place a call to get it fixed. The 'brain' went out... the electronics panel that controls the temperature in the refrigerator section. The freezer? Fine, no problem! I went and bought two thermometers at BB&B to verify their internal temperatures. The freezer was hovering at a frosty zero - where it should be. But the refrigerator while it was busted? A steady 60 degrees. Mind you, refrigerated food is supposed to stay at 40 degrees or below. Oh, yeah. It's true - 40 degrees or below. That's why people tell you not to eat the food at has been sitting in the sun at a picnic. You can get a hellish case of food poisoning if you do.

But anyway, I called my local Maytag repair man on Saturday morning. Little did I know that I had to be f*cking clairvoyant in order to get same day service from ANY appliance repairman in my area. They were already booked up since Friday for Saturday appointments. And they don't work on Sundays, so I was relegated to the next business days available appointment which was on Monday.

And I had to throw everything away in my refrigerator. I was mad because I don't like to waste food like that. After the repairman came on Monday and diagnosed the issue, he needed a deposit to come back with the part and fix the beast. I was fine with that. What I was not fine with was that he couldn't locate and install the part until Wednesday. Now I'm pissed because I haven't had my refrigerator available to me in a working condition for over a week.

And all the week the refrigerator was on the fritz, my son and I both ate out. And my expenses shot up because I could not cook at home. I resorted to eating at my boyfriends for two nights - that was nice. I even planned and cooked one meal - breaded fried talapia with mango salsa and steamed brussel sprouts.

But anyway, I digress. I don't know how many hundreds of years I had that stupid harvest yellow GE refrigerater eating up my money in electric bills before I finally bit the bullet and bought a new appliance. And now this happens. At least the part is warantied for a year. Damn thing better not die again, I swear.

Washington

Now that I have discovered that my son is related to George Washington, anytime the surname happens to pop-up into my life and I'm not actively searching it out, I stop to take a deeper look.

Last weekend in the Parade magazine that comes with the Sunday newspaper, there was an ad for Martha Washington's Cookbook. Intriguing.

Mother's Day Dinner (sort of)

I love to cook, but lately I have not been doing so good with battling the sheer exhaustion I've been facing with the long, long hours on this new job which I am just not used to anymore. So as I become accustomed again to 14 hours days away from my home, my sleeping patterns have changed and I'm now finding that at least on Saturdays, I can cook myself a decent meal. So in a celebration (sort of) of Mother's Day, which is actually on Sunday, I prepared:

grilled pork lion chops
homemade sourdough stuffing
chopped bartlett pears
five vegetable medley

...and to wash it down, diet pepsi, of course!

My Favorite Sunday Breakfast So Far

My favorite Sunday breakfast so far is one piece of sourdough toast buttered and then lightly sprinkled with a layer of garlic powder. Fry one or two eggs, your favorite style. While the egg is cooking, slice one tomato thin. Top the toast with a slice of black forest or Danola ham, then tomatoes, then your fried egg. Serve open-faced.

There it is. I don't know what it's called, but I crave it on a Sunday morning frequently.

    Cooking... again

KDOC has been playing tons of cooking shows lately, so guess what I've been on the look out for? That's right - recipes I can make with no milk. I keep a stack of index cards on the coffee table so I can jot down ingredients on one side and instructions on the other.

I watched this vegetarian cooking show which I found disgusting, Cuban veggie? no-no-no! Add some GD beef in that dish, please!

The next show was this everybody's Italian momma next door and I loved the recipes because the show was themed as well as the way she presented the recipe while she cooked. I believe the website that accompanies the show is entitled www.ciaoitalia.com. I collected the ingredients in order to make Crema di Piselli, Patate e Pancetta. I'll be making this tomorrow for lunch.

A Good Breakfast... and more cooking

I saw this in my head while reading the newspaper's food section this morning, so I thought I'd make it for breakfast. What's this "it" you ask? It was a fried egg, two thin slices of tomato on a one piece of buttered honeywheat bread. I cooked it in one pad or Nucoa and seasoned the egg with Morton's Nature's seasoning. It gives food more flavor than just salt or pepper would. I could of added a piece of Danola ham, but I was out. I was out of tomato, too, for that matter, so after I dropped my son off at school, I took a drive over to Sprouts in Irvine and gathered some fresh ingredients for breakfast and dinner. I wish I lived in a more temperate climate so that the fruit and vegetable prices would not fluctuate so much because of the cold winter months. I bought lemons for .50 cents each. Why am I not growing a lemon tree on my patio?

So the recipe I'm going to try out is one for some sort of lemon bars I clipped out of the newspaper this morning. I have to make it with Nucoa because I can't have milk so it's questionable whether it will turn out O.K. or not. Sometimes it does, and sometimes I have to tweak it a little for my non-dairy life. It seems you're destined to live a bakery-deprived life when you cannot tolerate milk and that just somehow seems wrong to me.

    On Thanksgiving Day

So today is Thanksgiving Day; a time to celibrate what we have been blessed with and thankful for as another year goes by in our lives. The menu is supposed to be representative of the first harvest festival in October1621 held by settlers at Plymouth, Massachusetts (1). These same folks were the survivors of the Mayflower crossing in 1620. Turkey, corn and greens, I imagine.

This is my menu for Thanksgiving 2007:
    turkey
    stuffing
    cranberry gel
    turkey gravy
    mashed potatoes
    baby peas and pearl onions
    herbed sourdough bread

    ...and for desert...
    apple pie
    pumpkin pie

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

    Small Kitchen Appliances

I enjoy cooking and if I can utilize any kind of kitchen implement while doing so, this makes me happy. I don't know why it does, it just is how it is and because I know this of myself, I relish being in my own kitchen and cooking. I have had the opportunity to cook professionally and only when I used the industrial tomato slicer, the lettuce corer or the grill scraper was I really happy. Now at home, I've found the ease of use and magic small appliances. This blog was spurred by me locating my coffee maker which resides in the only lower storage base cabinets in my kitchen. These two doors hide the fact that I have what I consider to be a small collection of small electric kitchen appliances. Let's inventory the collection:

    1. toaster
    2. microwave
    3. ISC convection cooker
    4. toaster oven
    5. full size food processor
    6. electric mixer (comes with 6 attachments)
    7. rice cooker
    8. coffee maker
    9. ice shaver
    10. crock pot
    11. blender
    12. juicer
    13. George Foreman's original Lean Mean Fat Reducing Grilling Machine
    14. B & D small chopper

Eventually, storage permitting, I'd like to also purchase:

    1. electric knife - for those times when carpel tunnel and carving meat don't mix
    2. ice cream maker - I'd magically transform into the sorbet goddess of OC
    3. Thunder Stick Pro - I saw this on an infomercial while on a business trip and I found myself drooling after it was over. Thank god I was alone in my hotel room when this occured... how embarrassing.
    4. any one of those rotissere type cookers - because A)I miss having a KOOKAAROO's in OC, and B) slow cooked meat braised in it own juices is THE BEST.

... now back to making that pot of blueberry flavored coffee my new gf introduced me to on Friday. Thank you DH.
