It's 2021: Happy New Year!

Officially, we are in month 10 of the Corona Virus epidemic in California and the world's population is now waiting in line to get vaccinated. All we have to do is wait for our turn and this nightmare will be over right?

Wrong.

You will still have to social distance to stop the spread. You will still have to wash your hands after everything you do in public. And you are supposed to stay home. If you can't, you wear a mask when out with other people and don't touch stuff like shopping carts unless you can wipe it off with a bleach wipe.

And then you might even have to get another shot in three months' time.

Personally, I knew, since I filed for unemployment benefits mid-March 2020 when they first were coming online in California, that they would run out in 6 months. September was my deadline. And due to my age and I knew it was going to be a struggle to find my next job. I started my job hunt during month 4 and I was lucky enough to get a job during month 5, so by the time September rolled around, I was already working.

But I work in finance, which is considered essential. I have to go into the office to process paperwork that gets sent out the next day, for the most part. If there were a way for me to be at home and perform the same job, I would.

But do I want to change jobs/roles? I don't know right now. And staying put and keeping my eyes and ears open I think is the smartest thing to do right now with so many people out of work.

New Years Eve, I worked 6 straight hours and then we were let out early. Typical for this company. They did the same thing for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I spent my time mostly online watch Twitch or playing xbox. I did have a glass of wine. Cheers!

Everyone I know wanted to sprint to 2021 as quickly as possible and put 2020 behind them. All we want to do is get back to "normal", but what most don't understand or maybe don't want to face is the reality that nothing is going back to the way it was ever again. We will face plexiglass sneezeguards and face masks through 2021.

Where's the money? Is it coming??

If you are unemployed in California...

https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/unemployment-checks-with-600-boost-rolling-out-this-week/2272524/

So it's supposed to be your UI award plus $600 per week for four months.

My max award started on 3/22/2020.

About the federal stimulus check:

https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payments

A one-time payment of $1200 for single status filers, no dependents. My son's father owes me back child support so his federal stim money is supposed to go to me, even if he considers himself disabled. We'll see how that plays out.

Today is day 26 staying at home with no job and I've seen no money yet. I mean, I'm marking it on my calendar each morning.

Too Hot

It is so hot and humid in California today, it's almost unbearable. Have you ever seen a  pre-school little girl hold up her dress to cool off? Picture me doing that in my house today. The fans in each room are not cutting the humidity unless you're sitting directly in front of the breeze.

Yesterday wasn't much better. I ate light in the AM and around lunchtime, drove to Commerce to look at LVP flooring. I have to replace the 15 year old carpet and my choice is to go the vinyl plank route. Why?

1. It's a DIY easy to install project
2. It's nano silver infused, so it's super sanitary
3. Even though Lumber Liquidators is in the neighborhood, I didn't like the products they were offering.

So I picked up this white washed oak color that is just what I was looking for. Light, clean, and thick at 5mm and at the aforementioned Lumber Liquidators? They only had one choice that was vinyl plank at 5mm. I feel like I got a good deal. I almost bought the entire pallet. I may go back this coming weekend and buy the rest so my whole house can be floored in that product.

As nice as carpet is under foot, it's just a seething, filthy, smelling mess after 15 years of use.

I don't remember when the weather has been so strange as California goes. There were lightning strikes near the beach in Venice, Palos Verde and Catalina...

Die With Your Boots On

You ever get a weird feeling someone you know is in distress or something bad happened to them? That's how I felt on this day.

Typically, I turned on the TV to watch the morning news to see how the traffic is. On this day, I was headed out of town to visit my aunt in Virginia, but early in the morning, there was a multiple car crash on the 5 Northbound near where I live. Later I come to find out that two of the people who died were former co-workers from Deutsche Bank

Friends described the fact that Sherry must have been driving and her car clipped a parked car on the left sitting near the HOV lane and then ricochetted off of the concrete barrier on the right like a pinball would then flung left back into traffic hitting another car. Clip-pow-pow. Just like that. Gone.

I went to their funeral after I got back from vacationing in Virginia. A lot of people from work went to the funeral. I think the family was kind of in awe to see so many showed up. I think they worked there for over 10 years, so you've had an opportunity to make an impact in that amount of time, you know?

I titled this blog entry "Die With Your Boots On" because Andrew sometimes came to work with black cowboy boots on.

RIP Andrew Hays 04/25/2014.

A Penny Here, A Penny There...

The State of California just approved a quarter of a cent sales tax increase with Proposition 30 for the next 4 years. This mean on January 1, 2013, the state sales tax for everyone is going up to 7.50%. In addition, it also increases the personal income tax for residents who earn over $250,000 for the next 7 years. And , no, I did not vote to increase my state's taxes.

Being lower middle class in OC is looking better all the time... as compared to the city of Los Angeles...

The sales tax there is already 8.75%

Shake it Baby, Shake it

I like summer. I wish I had the time to take it off.  Maybe I'll just take a long weekend and go to San Diego... Anyway, with the temperature change this week from moderate to hot-hot-hot (at least in my mind anyway) earthquakes have come to Southern California.

I said this at work: Who needs Yorba Linda anyway? Oh, so the presidential library shifts around a bit and some dust falls off of Nixon's old books. Who cares.

Here's the link for the USGS - happy earthquake tracking peoples:

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/shakemap/list.php?x=1&n=sc&y=2012

Three earthquakes just today (so far).

Oh, so now it's summer...

Mr. Sunshine finally decided to get off his ass and show up to the party this week in the Golden state. I don't know why the weather is so damn screwed up this year, but it's off and everyone's allergies are acting up. There is not one day that goes by without sneezes, sniffles or noses being blown in my office. That is one thing I hate about working in a cubicle farm - close proximity to sick people I cannot escape.

I went to see "Magic Mike" a couple of weeks ago with a couple of ladies from work. It was OK, not as much skin as I thought a male stripper movie would have and too much love story. It had a lot of hype the weekend it opened, and now- nothing. I was shot in Tampa... there is a distinct look about a Florida sky. I think a few of the scenes in the movie... like partying out on a sandbar and throwing a hurricane party are kind of lost on those people that don't know that is what it's like in Florida.

Having July 4th in the middle of the week this year sucked.

This past weekend, someone else rear-ended my SUV on the freeway. Nice, huh? My car's not even a year old and I get hit again. I'm starting to feel like I've got a target on my back. The other vehicle? Crumpled. Mine? A trim panel fell off of the bumper and that bumper it also scratched up.

What else??

Elsinore

I went to Elsinore on Sunday and visited my son's grandmother for a bit on the way to my mom's house. She just bought an REO home for $149K cash. It's 10 years old, a 4 bedroom, three bath, 2 car garage with a pool and fire pit in the backyard and RV parking on the side on a cultisac. All of the corners are bull nosed. All of the moulding is double stacked. It's got vaulted ceilings in most of the main rooms. All she had to do was paint and lay new carpet to move in.

It's nice, except for the kitchen which needs help. There is no large pantry you'd think a large house like that would have. It's only got a two door one like I have in my tiny condo built in the early 60's. She agrees, the lack of kitchen storage is frustrating. And she's a cook - she should know. It needs an additional pantry or island or something else in the way of storage.

It was empty for two years, so most of the landscaping is gone. My son was helping with that. She is planning on zero-scaping the front so there will be minimal maintenance needed. It's the same thing I'd like to do on my back patio.

Yelpity Good Bacon Fun!

Bacon? Did I hear bacon? I love bacon. I'm German so when anyone talks about cured meat, my ears perk up. And the folks at Yelp put together a fine VIP bacon themed event at the OC Fair the day before the fair opened to the public on Thursday, July 9th. Our group was at the bar/restaurant in the corner... Blue Bayou. It was located right next to the tent/trailer I don't remember which of the Weird Al Yankovic VIP party for the world preview of his OC Fair exhibition of "Al's Brain" going on at the same time. Being an "Elite" member of Yelp (no lie - it took me 4 years to get to that stage), I was able to bring two invited guests to our little party and I choose my son who's 22 and my co-worker who is new to Yelp. I couldn't give you an official headcount, but it felt like 200 people enjoying all these bacon tinged goodies like chocolate covered bacon, bacon wrapped meatballs covered in bbq sauce, bacon wrapped cocktail weenies (oh, just shove one directly into my heart already), Slaters 50/50 burgers that are made with half bacon (talk about flavor) and the premiere to California of Bakon Vodka. I know, you're thinking "gross", but I'm telling you this stuff makes the best bloody mary's ever. When our community manager Hazel told me in advance about it, we were talking about all of the food pairings... like Bakon Vodka and melon balls, fried green tomatoes, fried green beans, etc. There was more food than I could eat, but you can imagine. It was a biggest and best Yelp event yet.

About Last Night

I went to Long Beach for a few hours last night to get some air and clear my head. The only time I left the house over the weekend was to buy more groceries on Saturday night. How boring. I barely made it out into the patio to harass the cats. I did however remember to water the tomato plant. I think I have to move it to another location because it's not getting enough sun where it is now. Sunday was entirely too hot which reminded me I really should buy an A/C unit this year and install it. Maybe the whole ordeal would be easier if I just had it shipped to my house. If I could get free shipping that would be good. Anyway, developing 'The Pike' has changed the face of this area so much, it doesn't match to the faint memories of my childhood anymore. There are parking structures, a million restaurants, hotels, bars and clubs now. I walked around Shoreline Village to the end where the Parker's Lighthouse Restaurant is. Walked on Pine Street pier. Walked around the Ferris wheel that made strange groaning noises. My friend decided he wanted to explore what that BBQ smell was, so we walked over to Famous Dave's and he ordered - fish. It's a rubbed pork rib BBQ joint and he orders grilled fish. Whatever. I ordered a strawberry margarita because I was still full from lunch (a half of a homemade pepperoni pizza and a banana shake) but it was more like a slushie than anything and had no taste of alcohol. $6.95 for strawberry flavored ice in a goblet. I got home late and quickly found myself asleep.

We need those jobs here!

I read this article today:
US firm to close branch due to lack of employees

... and then I thought about all those mortgage companies that closed in Orange county over the past few years (such as the one I used to work at), and all those people who are still struggling to find a decent job because the unemployment rate in California is over 10%, and then I put two and two together and said to myself, "Why can't they move that branch office from North Dakota to my town?" We have ample people who need jobs and enough office space to house a branch off of Redhill Avenue. What can we do to bring this company to California?

And the answer is, "Not a damn thing." The governor has raised taxes again for businesses and employees alike making it unattractive to bring new companies into California from other states. If anything, call centers like the one described in the article that is closing in North Dakota would be located in remote areas like Lancaster where companies can keep the costs and wages low being located in generally depressed areas.

I like the fact the President Obama is throwing money at the problem of unemployment, but I wonder really how it's going to get to the tens of thousands of clerical office workers who need it. People who build roads won't hire me or my friends to do a man's job. People who build houses such as framers, drywall, tile, paint and plumbers, rarely want to take on concrete or asphalt work. And then there is the "We have a job for you *if* you have the experience". The golden question surrounding that is, "How do you get experience in a field you've never worked in before in order to get a good paying job?"

Sometimes, I think the free market economy we live in is highly over-rated.

Reunions

I was born in 1966 in Long Beach, California. My father worked as a machinist primarily in the aerospace industry and my mother was a bank teller up until the point I was born. Before I was two years old, my dad had bought five and a half acres on Tokay Avenue near Baseline and we moved there living in a tiny farm house. My neighbor to the south was the Beer's Farm and to the north across the street was an egg ranch. Growing up, I lived on a working ranch with an ever changing array of animals. After I started school, my playmates were the animals in my yard or classmates that lived on Citrus and further. I took boiled goose eggs to school for snack time. After school, I would cross the field and play at the Hotyek's house. We'd play board games after school as well as cards and school. Karen was a classmate and her older sisters sometimes were my babysitters. I remember in first grade I had to go to Janice Taylor's house because we had the same lunchbox and picked up the wrong one when leaving school. I remember going to Monique Pinkerton's house in order to participate in BlueJays which was a sort of junior girl scouts troupe for girls.

After my parents were divorced when I was 7, I went to many different schools in Fontana. Juniper, South Tamarind, Jurupa, Fontana Jr. High and Sequoia Jr. High, too. In 1981, at Fontana High School I was a Sophomore as was the rest of my class. 9th grade was still housed at the junior high school level at that time.

I graduated high school in 1984 and our class's biggest worry was what the future had in store for us as a gloomy piece of literature written years before hung in our conscientiousness. The last thing on my mind was if I was ever going to see the people I had gone to high school with as my immediate need was to find my own mental clarity and what my purpose in the world was going to be. The day after I graduated from high school, I was 17 years old and moved miles and miles away from everything that was familiar to me to make a fresh start and gain some perspective on what I had experienced growing up in a broken home with fractured, imperfect people as parents.

By 1994, I had lived in a number of cities, but settled in Tustin, California, near where I was working for an investment bank making a career for myself in the financial industry and a home for my son. It never occurred to me that 45 miles and two counties away my name was on a list as part of a reunion plan because I never received an invitation.

In 2004, I had bought a home, was working at another job in the same industry and my son was a junior in high school when I received the notice that my graduating class was going to reunite. After twenty years, I had not made any effort to stay in contact with anyone from my high school days and my best friend was living in Kansas. I had little interest in seeing classmates that probably barely remembered me.

So now in 2009, I was recruited to participate in the 25th anniversary of my class reunion as a member of the committee. To be continued after the reunion takes place...

More fire...

Now the fire is visable from my office as it creeps over the Santa Susana pass. The smoke is now blowing over the city of Simi Valley and is beginning to permeate the a/c system.

I was left with a quarter of a tank of gas after I arrived to work this morning, so at lunch I went and gassed up knowing that my trek home tonight is going to be probably longer than it has ever been before.

Southern California Fires in Los Angeles County

See: Fire in Porter Ranch

At 10:30 AM today, the hills above Porter Ranch at Oat Mountain, the tallest mountain in the Santa Susana mountain range, began to catch fire as the smoke and embers from the Marek fire rapidly move over the San Fernando Valley towards the ocean blown by the gusty, dry Santa Ana winds. This fire is now known as the Sesnon Fire.

Right now, the 118 freeway, the one I travel on to get to work and home is open but closed at the 210, which is north of where I travel. I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to get home using my normal route tonight. I might have to take the 405 south to get back to Orange County.

While I'm bashing LA...

It seems The Los Angeles Times has a funny bone, too. Imagine that.

I'm not the only one bashing Los Angeles. It's own residents do it in photos.

Saturday & Sunday

Saturday, September 20th was one of the last days of summer. People rush around to go do something, anything in the sun while it's around. That was our plan... Robert and I are going to Lake Perris SRA Sunday to hang out and ride his waverunner. I an terrified of any sort of big water, but I'm going to face my fear and go for it. He said he would keep me safe.

In the mean time, we had dinner Saturday night at Sakura. You would never think that this place located in a strip mall next to Ralph's would not be any good, but if you thought that, you'd be wrong. This is actually the second time we went there and I got to tell ya, it just keeps getting better and better.

I ordered a sashimi plate and Robert got the baked mussels. We both got these fried chili spiked green peppers. I did fine on the baby one with no chili, but when I got to the second one and bit into the chili, I thought my mouth was on fire. We also both had orders green bean w/ peanut. It's O.K., but I think they are just trying too hard with that one. We also shared a special crunchy roll. Yummy. As for dessert, the chopped orange with plum wine. That thing is crazy good. To wash it all down, we drank ice water and I think 3 bottles of dry cold saki which were shared with the proprietors.

After dinner, we went over to Ralph's in our saki induced haze and bought snacks for the trip on Sunday. A bowl of chopped mixed fruit, a can of nuts, Triskets, Milanos cookies, a package of shrimp, and cocktail sauce. Robert had already taken care of the drinks and the ice.

So before going to Roberts on Saturday night, I thought I had packed what I need to bring to go to the lake. I had shorts, a top and a light jacket for the morning because it's usually kinda cold in the desert and some rubbery flip flops. I was informed I needed a bathing suit because I was going to get wet. Oh hell. I wasn't planning on getting wet because all I wanted to do was learn how to cruise in the waverunner and not get dumped into the lake. So the stupid alarm goes off at 4:30AM by accident and we sleep in until 5:30AM and then I get dressed to run over to my condo with his blessing to give the dog a car ride in order to grab a tshirt, my polo shirt dress and my bathing suit. In my mind, I'm thinking a wet or not, a tshirt over my red string bikini would be ok for waverunner riding and prevent needless sunburning atleast on my shoulders and some of my arms.

I changed into the bikini and wore the polo dress over it during the commute. We backed everything up, got gas and hit the road at about 7:30AM. I was tagged shotgun navigator. That 60 E to the 215 S interchange is still under construction and confusing as hell because the signage is not quite right. Robert said he missed it before and I can see why. What a pisser that exchange is!

While passing through Riverside, Robert said we had to go eat breakfast at McDonalds. He said it was tradition. I was game. We exited at McKinley and found our way over to the restaurant on the north side of the freeway. I ordered an egg mcmuffin w/ no cheese, a hash brown and a hi-c orange drink from the fountain. Robert got the two sausage mcmuffin with egg deal and coffee. We sat where we could keep an eye on the waverunner and the reserve gas bottles.

We made out way out to Perris Lake by 8:30AM and had everything set-up and the waverunner launched in about 20 minutes.

The shirt turned out to be a good idea because it provided me some level of cottony comfort under the life preserver. It also acted as a cover-up for my bikini while I sat under the Ez-Up and hung out in the shade snacking, reading the newspaper, listening to the Angels baseball game on the radio, sunning my pasty white calves and taking pictures of Robert, among other things, as he came in and out of the water.

I went out onto the lake with Robert a total of three times. The first time, I screamed "No!" about one hundred times until he reduced his speed to about 25 mph. I couldn't get over the fact that the speed feels so much faster on the water. It's got to have something to do with the wave motion and all the reflections. Amazing.

The second time, he went putt-putt slow for me around the island in the middle of the lake. That was nice. I can handle cruising under 20 mph. We saw how folks were set-up on the island, how some were fishing, and some local flora and and fauna which is stuff like I like to do anyway. I'm an observer, so that was cool.

The third time, which he said didn't count?!? wth... we went straight to the dam area which is not visible from the Lot 5 location where we set-up camp for the day. That was kinda weird and kinda cool because I never seen anything like that before. He went faster than putt-putt this time, so I was having a difficult time with the jarring and my breathing was still in panic mode, but I wasn't yelling "No!" so much this time. Then he told he ate it twice over by the dam later in the day, broke a toe, jammed up another and ended up with some weirdly placed bruises on his body from getting dumped off of the waverunner. Gesus. He told me Evil Kenevil was his hero before we got out to the lake. So now I know I'm dealing with a man with no fear. Good in some situations, but not with high rate of speed in uncontrolled environments. Maybe he'd like one of those race car driver packages they offer at the speedway in Fontana for Christmas... hrmmm. I'll have to poke around and see if he's ever done that before. But I digress...

So we were out there maybe a total of about 6 hours. It was nice to be out in nature with him because it's something I would not do alone. I told him it was a big deal for me to do something like going on the waverunner and step out of my box... out of my comfort zone. He said he proud of me and now wants to take me up to Lake Mead with my own Yahama Waverunner Cruiser. That was a lot to take in all at once considering I'm not confident even riding alone on his vehicle yet. Sounds cool because I like the desert, but yikes! My own waverunner?? I'll have to go to Lake Perris a few more times before going to Lake Mead.

He told me no one took pictures when he went before so I think he liked the fact that I took pictures when we went. I think they are important especially for only children. I've taken tons of pictures of my son so much so that he now considers me paparazzi and hold up his hand or turns his head all the time. So now I have another subject to photograph - good. I received an email from newegg.com today with a price shocker on an Olympus splash resistant digital camera, which lead me to look deeper for a water resistant one that I could take onto the waverunner without totally freaking out if it got wet. That would be cool to take pictures from that vantage point. He could do his version of speed racer on the water and I could go putt-putt and be happy.

Be careful what you wish for

So previously, I complained that the state of california was fining private residents for not clearing away brush from there homes, but on the southern california freeway systems I happen to drive now with regular frequency, there is a virtual fire hazzard just waiting to happen.

Last night driving home from work, I viewed the CalTrans orange bags left on an area where the trash and weeds was cleared away on the gore point on the east LA interchange east where the 10 east merges with the 5 east. Nice.

It was the same area where I think I counted no less than 5 hubcaps, 4 bottles of assorted booze and what not.

We don't honk

In California, we are a laid back kind of crowd most of the time even in the worst of situations driving in bumper to bumper traffic in rush hour. We rarely use our horns to honk about anything or anyone. Today though, when I was cut off on the east LA interchange by a brand new Mercedes, I honked. I honked because it was with no blinker, it was while I was attempting to merging into lane lane #2 and this idiot was changing lanes while I was merging and almost hit me. I had to stop to watch this ass almost hit me, then check the lane to the left again to make sure I had enough room to go and then merge. I was happy to see the white mini truck hold the lane open for me. Maybe he thought I honked at him, but I didn't.

The Freeway Prize

I have a long drive home and I absolutely HATE IT when traffic comes to a dead stop especially for no reason, so I bought a GPS for my car to help me to avoid the issues along the way. This was my route home tonight and I still made it in an hour and a half:

118 east
5 south
710 south
105 east
605 south
91 east
5 south

Do I get prize or something?

How I spent my Easter Sunday

First I had a song in my head, so I wrote a blog about it. See previous entry.

Then, I was supposed to go to San Clemente to meet a friend to spend the day and hang out. Well, we went to the pier and walked around, yacking it up all the way there and back, but couldn't really do much more than that because it was Easter and places were closed for the holiday. Here's the four pictures I took.

I ate dinner at El Ranchito because I was hungry and it was open, thank you very much. I had the Carne Asada plate and the Strawberry Margaritas could have been bigger. My margarita limit was two. YUM! Their Menu
