The detours of life

It's the end of summer and a few days away from Labor Day weekend. It was hardly a summer at all. No sweltering, sweaty days and balmy nights in 2010, my friend. It's my opinion volcanic ash is preventing that from happening for awhile. I just wonder what's in store for winter. The warmest winter ever perhaps?

I went to the Pasadena Jazz & Blues Fest for a good chunk of the day last Saturday which was about the most summery thing I've done to date besides maybe BBQ.

I'm in Santa Monica again. And I say "again" within the notion that I was here before for love and now, yes, again, I think. The last time was about 15 years ago.

All this getting to know each other better business has been pretty smooth, really. Surprisingly smooth. I guess part of that is with age comes wisdom. Mostly is compatibility which was very hard for me to to find. But then he found me when I was looking elsewhere. It's almost a relief to find someone who mostly thinks about things in a similarity vein as I do. We are not very careful with our words with each other and most of the time that's o.k., too.

As I'm writing this blog entry, he's over to my left beyond the keyboard serenading me, sort of, playing licks on his Ibanez. Coincidentally, I also own an Ibanez, but when I play it doesn't sound anything like what comes out of his amp. Listening to him play makes me want to trade to get a bass.

So you found out you're... I know, "Don't remind me."

It took a long time for me to come to terms with the fact that eliminating milk from my diet made me feel better. I discovered it about six months after I moved away from home right out of high school. I began an elimination diet taking out one thing and then adding it back in a month later. Butter was the first thing to go.

I enjoy all different kinds of food and I don't want to feel deprived, so it's not easy. Everyday is a struggle to make good food choices for myself. Eating out has been the biggest challenge. I'm glad I now live in an area where I have access to lots of Asian restaurants and it helps that I actually enjoy that kind of food. Where I grew up, that wasn't the case; a writing sample can be found on Yelp when I wrote about buying a stack of pizzas for the office at Pizza Hut when I worked as a contractor. Farmer's markets have also helped me slow down and plan meals in advance I can make so I don't screw up my diet.

Imagine living in a world where you realize latter your mom is poisoning you a little every day because she fed you something that was known to be a nutritious food and yet your body rejects it and in turn when you complain about a stomach ache, she does nothing. I used to writhe in pain on the bathroom floor after eating cheese, ice cream or drinking milk and when the cool floor tile pressed against my lower belly, I found it was the only thing that eased the pain. It's a wonder I graduated from high school because I was out sick probably for the maximum number of days a kid could be and the majority of the time it was for a stomach ache.

You might have noticed I have a vertical scar that runs from my belly button down to the top of my pelvis. It's not from a C-Section. I've had two major surgeries to remove parts of my intestine because Crohn's Disease runs in my family. At this point, I'm missing about 32 inches of gut so when I have to go to the restroom, the feeling is very intense and I have to go NOW. It's really annoying and depressing to have to know where the restroom is all the time, but I've gotten used to it. The other scar is from having a ruptured appendix which lead to the discovery of the aforementioned disease on December 15, 1985. The second operation on June 22, 2000 left me with surgically induced pernicious anemia so I get a B12 shot once a month. There is also a list of foods that just don't digest well anymore, so I avoid those, too. For example, you won't find me eating a salad made with iceburg lettuce because it works like a laxative on me. On top of it, the disease creates a general malabsorption of vitamins and minerals so a lot of the time, I feel a general malaise and not that energized (hence the state of my condo which I bought in 1999).

The doctors told me because of the scaring inside me from the disease, I might not be able to get pregnant, so when I found my first love/boyfriend in 1986 after living a repressed home life because my mom didn't allow me to date in high school, after being being together for five months, of course I got pregnant and decided to go forward with having a baby knowing the odds that I may not be able to again. I had Stephen in 1987, 4 days after I turned 21.

I had to supplement Stephen with soy formula when he didn't thrive while being breast-fed. It's common for infants to not be able to digest regular cows milk based infant formula and I latter found out that the disease skips a generation in my family, so he thankfully has no issues with dairy, but his kids probably will.

So how do you like me now?

Next time you crave something sweet, my diabetic friend, my advice to you would be, even though at this point it probably goes in one ear and out the other or makes you angry, is to grab some fruit and sugar free Cool-Whip so you don't have to feel so deprived and maybe add just a bit of chocolate shavings on top.

To let know know how much of a food 'nazi' I had to be to keep my own diet on track, during stressful times (especially when I was a contractor) I used to Twitter what I ate daily for all the world to see. Gees, I just realized I have even more food stories to write about... jaundice colored catfish - LOL.

Funny vs. Not Funny

Funny:

"Blowjobs are like snowflakes... each one is unique."
-Sam Kinison

Not funny:

When it takes over 3 hours to travel 42 miles on the 405 Freeway in Southern California. Atleast I had three XM comedy channels to listen to.

Rawk On

It's been one month short of 5 years since I met Kenny Howes and now he's out of here. He's moving to Texas. Dallas, that is. With his girlfriend. He came into my life at a time when I was at my lowest emotional low, right after my dad died. He wanted a redhead and I was a brunette so that was that. I can't say that we were ever good friends, but I can't say we were less than acquaintances either. Oh, those flowing blond curly locks. A free flowing, goof ball of an Aquarius and a crabby, wise ass Sybil of a Gemini were just never meant to be any more than friends. Thanks for The Move, Beatles, ELO and musical equipment discussions. One day, I'm going to make a special edition box to house all your CD's in. One day.

Helloo 44

Yesterday was my 44th birthday. I've been on this earth for 44 years. 44. Forty plus four. Here I am. Where have I been? What have I become? Where am I going?

I probably was supposed to ask myself questions like these a while ago, but life got in the way. Now that my son is two years away from graduating college, I feel like I've got a second chance to mold my life into something that's going to make me more happy than just getting by on the day-to-day grind that someone else was so kind to show me the path to.

To be human is to make mistakes. As long as you are open enough to learn from them and not repeat them, you take another step along your journey to a good life.

Funky

I've been in a funk lately. I think it's a combination of things that are effecting my moods: my job, turning 44, getting my Crohn's under control, not getting out of life what I thought I wanted in so much as a career goes and being lonely. Social anxiety makes me shy and nervous around groups of unfamiliar people. It's amazing to me that some people that have come to my attention recently are worse off than me financially and still somehow function. I guess I'm at a point where I don't have anything to really live for and the question, "What's next?", is being waved furiously in my face and I'm avoiding the answer for fear of my own disappointment and that feeds my procrastination. I've always been one to do just enough to get by and I've been happy with that, but since now I don't even feel like doing that... funk. Funkity, funk, funk.

Don't mind me, I just live here.

Thank you, John Kumpart. I've been looking for the words to start my blog all week long.

My neighbors in #15 have been remodeling their bathroom for far too long and I want the noise to stop. But especially the noise before 8AM and after I go to bed. That is quite annoying, indeed. We share a common wall.

I wish they were more respectful in general. When they first moved in, they installed a washer and dryer on their patio next to where my bedroom is. Because I complained to the HOA, they moved it to the other side of their patio instead of removing it altogether. I hate them for that.

I also hate it when they smoke on the patio and the smell travels into my condo when I leave the sliding glass door open for my cats to poo outside. I hate it when the one guy walks his motorcycle into his patio storing it there and I hate it when he starts it up there as well. I hate when they leave their dog unattended and it barks uncontrollably at all hours. And I hate when their kids throw stuff over the fence into my yard. I also hate the satellite dish they mounted on the fence where everyone can see it. All these things are against HOA rules. Worse condo neighbors ever.

convergance

Today is a day when lots of thing are converging. Rotd on yelp and talked to my uncle this morning who told me my grandma passed away yesterday. She was 102.

That Rotd was the last time I was on a date and it went bad, but last night I talked to a guy on the phone for two hours and we clicked. We are supposed to meet for lunch on Saturday at a place of his choosing. He's got the word angel in his last name. Italian, 3 cats, a tortoise and works in the mortgage industry like me. So he might be an o.k. guy which makes me feel hopeful for the future.

Physical... Education?

When I take the Metro light rail to work, I walk from the train station to work which is about 15 minutes away. It's not a big deal. I pre-plan my trip to make sure that when I depart from the train I have enough time to walk to work. As I come out of the station and walk south to the first crosswalk, I cross the street and pass by a business with the name Spectrum Athletic Club.

I always encounter someone on their long sidewalk. And I started to think about all the different people that that I've seen come and go from this place as I walk to and from work. It's a funny juxtaposition to me. Here I am walking to work to earn a living... here are all these people walking into and out of a gym they paid money to go to.

They have paid someone to tell them to work out. But can't you do that for yourself?

'Physical education' is a funny term.

Until you were in junior high, you didn't need any education on how to be physical. You and your neighborhood friends somehow spent most of your waking hours outside playing. Even at school, you played games to get that extra added activity in and got a grade for it.

Once junior high hits you, physical education then turns into a chore. Why is that? One specific person to tell you that, today, you're going to run the track because that's why they deem to be physical enough for you? Something just seems wrong with that.

My life at work

Seriously, what is wrong with people... what were they thinking when they invite me to a meeting without telling me the agenda or the fact that it's a sales person? Trying to be congenial, all I could think of was the fact that I'm never going to get that hour back ever. I went to lunch 20 minutes late because of it.

The salesman basically came by to talk about another product that's not even in production yet trying to generate interest. I wish I were somewhere else.
